Do I need a licensed plumber in North Carolina?
For most plumbing work beyond a simple fixture swap, yes. North Carolina requires a licensed contractor for plumbing installations and repairs, and a permit is usually required. The same board licenses heating and air work, so an HVAC contractor is listed here too.
What do the classifications mean?
The board licenses by scope. Plumbing Class I has no cap on job size and Class II is limited. Heating is split into Groups 1 to 3 covering different equipment, and Fuel Piping and Fire Sprinkler are separate classifications again. A license page lists every classification that licensee holds.
Is an HVAC license the same as a plumbing license?
No, but they come from the same board. Heating classifications are separate from plumbing ones, and plenty of contractors hold both. Check that the classification covers the work you are paying for.
