Common questions
- When do I need a licensed land surveyor?
- Any time a boundary matters. Buying land, splitting a lot, settling a fence or encroachment dispute, or recording a plat all require a survey by a licensed professional land surveyor. A mortgage lender or attorney will usually require one too.
- Is a surveyor the same as an engineer?
- No, and the same board licenses both under separate licenses. A professional land surveyor establishes boundaries and produces plats; a professional engineer designs and seals engineering work. Some people hold both.
- How do I read an NC surveyor license number?
- Land surveyor licenses are prefixed with an L, for example L-5129. Engineers are plain digits and firms are prefixed with a C.
- Who licenses land surveyors in North Carolina?
- The North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBELS), the same board that licenses professional engineers.
