Do I need a licensed electrician in North Carolina?
For most electrical work, yes. North Carolina requires a licensed electrical contractor for electrical installations, and a permit is typically required. A homeowner may perform limited work on their own primary residence, but hiring a licensed electrical contractor is the norm and is often legally required.
What do the electrical license classifications mean?
The board licenses by scope. Unlimited has no cap on the size of a job. Intermediate covers mid-size work, and Limited covers smaller projects. Single Family Detached Residential Dwelling is limited to residential homes, and the Special Restricted classifications cover specific work like fire alarm and low voltage, elevators, swimming pools, or electric signs.
What if an electrician isn't listed here?
The board publishes active licenses. An electrician missing from this registry may not hold an NC electrical contractor license, may be listed under a different legal name than the one they trade under, or the license may be very new. Absence is a reason to ask questions, not proof of wrongdoing.
