How the lookup works
Type a company name or a license number. We match against the licenses the NC board publishes, not just the ones near you.
See status, classification, and the project limit that caps how big a job a contractor can legally take on. Every field comes from the board.
Confirm the license is active and the classification fits your project before you sign anything or hand over a deposit.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a licensed general contractor in North Carolina?
- In North Carolina, any construction project with a total value of $40,000 or more generally requires a licensed general contractor. Below that threshold a license is not required by the state, though local permit rules may still apply.
- What do the license limits mean?
- North Carolina caps the size of a single project by license limit: Limited allows projects up to $1 million, Intermediate up to $2 million, and Unlimited has no cap. A contractor bidding above their limit is a red flag worth raising.
- Why does a contractor show up under a classification they aren't classified for?
- The licensing board's search is based on what work a license permits, not only what it is classified as. A Building contractor is generally permitted to do residential, roofing, or pool work, so they appear in those searches without being a specialist in them. We show both facts separately on each license page.
- What if a contractor isn’t listed here?
- The board publishes active licenses. A contractor missing from this registry may not hold an NC general contractor license, may be listed under a different legal name than the one they trade under, or may work only on projects under the $40,000 threshold where no license is required. Absence is a reason to ask questions, not proof of wrongdoing.
Every license here is sourced from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors and checked against the board on a regular schedule. If a contractor is not listed, that is a reason to ask questions, not proof of anything. Some work under the $40,000 state threshold where no license is required. To report a contractor, file a complaint with NCLBGC.
